webbed together Explanation: I believe they are referring to webbing here. Babies with thumb duplication (or thumb polydactyly) are born with an extra thumb on one or both hands. The two thumbs on one hand can be joined or webbed together. https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/thumb-duplication.html |

fused together with an interposed membrane Explanation: I would describe this as: two thumbs fused together with an interposed membrane. Synarthrosis (articulation) is expressive of the fixed form of joint in which the bones are immovably connected with each other. It is the latter connexion which gives rise to the great difficulty sometimes experienced… this interposed membrane as a sutural cartilage. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=stNk0CAgIp8C&pg=PA139&lp... What is thumb duplication? Thumb duplication is a congenital condition, which means that your baby was born with it. Children with thumb duplication have two thumbs on one hand. The thumbs may be separate or appear fused together. It is not painful and usually only affects one hand. How is thumb duplication diagnosed? A split thumb can sometimes be seen during a prenatal ultrasound. If not detected during pregnancy, the condition is visible at birth. Your baby will have x-rays at some point to see the structure of their thumbs and to decide on treatment. How is thumb duplication treated? Thumb duplication is treated with surgery to create a single, functioning thumb. This will probably happen when your child is about 1 to 2 years old. Surgery to correct thumb duplication can be complex. Simply removing the extra thumb is not usually enough. Each of the split thumbs has elements that need to be combined to recreate one fully working thumb. https://www.childrenshospital.org/conditions-and-treatments/... |
