Penso que o "for centuries" não pode ser ignorado na tradução. Esta advérbio tem a função de dar ênfase ao fato de que os seus antepassados ficaram naquela mesma vida (ou "vidinha", se quiser adicionar uma pitada de desprezo) há séculos. O "seculos" pode ou não ser uma hipérbole, um exagero. Só o contexto maior pode dizer com certeza.

Sugiro analisar melhor o contexto geral. Quem diz esta frase é uma pessoa culta, instruída, urbana? Se for, pode haver um certo preconceito contra a vida rural (ela menciona "os repolhos") ou até mesmo quanto ao nível educacional, supondo-se que seus antepassados não tiveram as mesmas oportunidades que ela.

Ah, Marie Lloyd ... she sang "She sits among the cabbages and peas" unitl they made her change it. Then she sang "She sits among the lettuces and leeks", which was OK - the Lord Chancellor of the day obviously led a sheltered life!
