Botany
English term or phrase: edge view
The multi-seeded, coiled pod of alfalfa gives the seeds a characteristic shape: the radicle end of the seed is pointed or rounded, the seeds are twisted or curved in edge view
You can see that even though the seed is generally oval shaped, how the shape changes with the position in the pod
The thin coloured line and groove between the radicle and seed leaves can be seen in this image

Explanation:
I believe this is a term one might use for 'seen edge-on'.

neutral  Germaine: J'en doute énormément: chant = Face la moins large d'un objet parallélépipédique. Le chant d'une brique, d'un livre, d'une planche... La phrase ne contient pas ni ne suggère cette précision.

-> But yes, it specifically says "in edge view" — IOW, when viewed in the direction of their smallest dimension

coupe longitudinale

Explanation:
Il faudrait voir le sens du croquis, mais en botanique ou en science, on parle souvent de coupe transversale/longitudinale/sagittale...

neutral  Tony M: There is nothing here to suggest it is actually any form of 'coupe'

-> coupe here is not in the sense of "to cut", but in the sense of "view" (see 2. B. 2). Reading the end of the paragraph, it seems we are looking at an image ? https://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/coupe
