sus piernas se enterraban hasta las rodillas...

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Literature.
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from Latin American Spanish into American English. Translator colleagues from Spain, feel free to send me your suggestions as well. This is a translation about the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves.
Is okay to translate it as when he walked the legs were getting buried on his knees?

Here is the full paragraph for your review:

Tras un buen rato caminando a oscuras, con mucha calma pues al andar sus piernas se enterraban hasta las rodillas entre la grava del suelo, de pronto Alí Babá llegó al final de la cueva, tocando las paredes, se dio cuenta que había perdido la orientación y no sabía escapar de allí.
Se sentó en una de las piedras decidido a esperar a los ladrones, para poder conocer el camino de regreso, decepcionado porque no había encontrado nada de oro, se acomodó tras las rocas y se quedó adormilado.

he sank knee-deep into the gravel with every step he took

I think that he is moving and is sinking every time he takes a step. This might be an option.

his legs were buried up to his knees

I think that should do it.
