I can't think of a concise term, but these were songs that were played on the radio all the time, very popular but with no intelectual aspirations ... I would say they were unexportable ... they could only become famous in Portugal. :)

O nacional-cançonetismo é uma expressão utilizada em termos musicais para definir as canções e o tipo de música que o regime ditatorial do Estado Novo em Portugal promovia e incentivava, na rádio e na televisão de Portugal, em especial na década de 1960 e tiveram os seus expoentes máximos Madalena Iglésias, Simone de Oliveira, Artur Garcia e António Calvário.

A maioria das canções interpretadas por aqueles cantores "iludiam" com banalidades a situação do país (emigração, censura, repressão, guerra colonial, etc), sendo também um veículo de propagação das ideias do Estado Novo. Como contraponto existiu a partir dos finais da década de 1960 e década de 1970, a chamada música de intervenção.

Contudo, não podemos negar a sua popularidade na época (por muita censura que existisse, de facto eles eram mesmo populares e ídolos da juventude portuguesa de então) e alguns destes cantores também cantaram letras de expoentes da música de intervenção, como é o caso de Simone de Oliveira que cantou poemas de José Carlos Ary dos Santos fugindo à banalidade reinante.
