Los "spring spiral tubes" se conocen habitualmente como "coil tubes" en inglés y son la parte externa de los cables de angulación ("angulation wires") de los endoscopios. Como ya se vió antes, el texto utiliza términos no estándares.

Los cables de angulación permiten que se vaya torciendo el extremo distal del endoscopio en diversos ángulos y curvaturas. Para ello se tensa el cable de acero interno, y el tubo de resorte exterior protege a los demás componentes del endoscopio contra el efecto serrante de la fricción con el cable de acero. Se utilizan también en muchas aplicaciones donde deben conducir y proteger cables internos, como en cables de frenos de bicicletas, algunos tornos de odontología, tubos de limpieza dentro de desagues domésticos ("herramienta de dragado"), etc.

Dos de las referencias aportadas por abe(L)solano en su propuesta de traducción se refieren a tubos que se utilizan en fontanería para curvar manualmente tubos de cobre, plomo o algunos plásticos rígidos que se estrangulen, conservando su sección transversal. Por lo que no conducen cables y habitualmente tienen un extremo abocinado. La tercera referencia es a una página que muestra diversos tipos de resortes de uso general.
