Reference information:
There is no standardization as far as how the university departments are named in American universities. The term "Modern Languages" usually means the study of both language and literature. The University of Arizona, for example, where I studied and taught for three years, the departments are named after the language names or whatever discipline they teach. For example: Department of English, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Department of Social Sciences, Department of Latin American Studies, etc. Their Modern Languages Building (follow link below) houses all the language departments, which includes the study of literature. Only exception is "Law School", which is probably standard across the country. NB: I do not recommend adding words that are not in the original, especially if it's an academic and technical translation. Additions are considered translation errors unless they are absolutely needed to clarify something that cannot be expressed otherwise. (Check out Abrates and A.T.A. for more on this topic.)
