"Von 1999 bis 2003 bewarben sich bundesweit insgesamt 514 Wissenschaftlergruppen um Förderung ihrer Projekte bei PUSH; gefördert wurden davon 67 Projekte mit einer Gesamtsumme von 1,2 Mio. €."
I think there must be some specific term for "Wissenschaftlergruppen" that is evading me or does "scientific/scientist groups" serve the purpose? Also, is my translation of the second part, "um Förderung ihrer Projekte" to "for the promotion of their projects" sufficient? I think the holiday spirit is giving me brain block. Thanks and happy holidays! My translation of the complete phrase follows:
=
"From 1999 to 2003 a total of 514 scientist groups nationwide applied for the promotion of their projects by PUSH; of this number 67 projects were sponsored for a total amount of 1.2 million Euros."

German term (edited):
Wissenschaftlergruppen um Frderung ihrer Projekte
groups of scientists
for getting grant-aid for their projects
having their projects grant-aided
I would not use promoting here, the context clearly shows that the scientists want money
