English term

Economy Seven

English to Dutch Art/Literary Slang
The sentence is: "When I want to have an emotional scene with my household, I'd better do it late at night on Economy Seven." Is Economy Seven een televisiekanaal of zoiets?

'nachtstand'

my guess: it's a phrase refering to a level of heating saving energy (nachtstand)
Dus .. wordt het wat kouder en zal de 'emotional scene' zich eerder voltrekken. In 't nederlands ook nog eens een dubbelzinnige uitdrukking ;-)

agree Carl Sennett : seaMount is right. "Economy Seven" was marketed by the British electricity distributors in the 1970s as a cheap tariff for household electric heaters that operated at night-time. They were supposed to store the heat and release it slowly by day.

Thank you Carl, what a historical phrase! Kind of 'cheater' in this context?

What is Economy 7?
Economy 7 is an electricity tariff with different pricing structures according to the time of day. The energy you use during the night costs less, per unit, than energy used during the day.
Will Economy 7 save me money?
Obviously if you use more energy during the night than the day, you will save money. However, you need to be using roughly 20% of your energy consumption at night to be making a saving. And when they say night, they really mean night - the cheaper tariff usually starts around 1am and finishes around 8am (this can vary by supplier and region).

Be aware that some Economy 7 tariffs may charge you almost double the standard rate for any energy you use during the day, which can quickly cancel out any savings you\'ve made through using Economy 7 at night.v
