French term

en poquet fermé

French to English Science Agriculture planting rice
This is a text about growing rice in Benin and was probably not written by a native French speaker. Quote from one of the rice farmers:

Poquet is a seed hole, but is he really applying urea in a closed seed hole? Sounds odd.

MoiraB (asker) Dec 20, 2019:
No indication at all in the text, I'm afraid.
Bashiqa Dec 20, 2019:
Just a thought. Were the fertilizers applied at the same time as planting? If so then it possibly went into the seed hole with the seeds.

dibbling or pocket drilling

I'm guessing that he fertilised by pocket drilling, too, with the holes being covered over (which is why he says "fermé) instead of just spreading the fertilisers.

HTH!

agree SafeTex : Dibbling seems to be a "closed hole" method for sowing seed

in closed holes

A "poquet" is a small hole made in the ground with the hand, to sow seeds in tufts. As such, without being sure, I can propose "closed holes", and I think it can go in this context.
