cassonnier

French to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting history of kilns
In a document about the history of stoneware production in France. This section talks about conducting an archaeological dig on a site, investigating buried kilns using magnetic prospecting. I can't find any references to this at all! Any help gratefully received.

Excavation of a Romano-British site near Ingleton, carried out by the Ingleborough Archaeology Group in autumn 2003, revealed a BURIED LIME KILN. Before excavation, this had shown up as a shallow, circular bowl with a narrow entrance on its eastern face. High magnetic readings suggested it could have been an iron-working furnace, though its shape indicated it could equally have been a simple type of lime kiln known as A SOD OR SOW KILN. [ ... ] How did we explain the high magnetic readings from the kiln?

See also "scove kiln", used for brickmaking. Not sure of the relevance of magnetic prospecting to the type of kiln. The above "dales heritage" site suggests magnetic readings would be associated with iron furnaces, whereas your text refers to ceramic/stoneware ...

Then there are pye kilns, though it appears these and all those I've named were actually for making lime mortar, not ceramics.

Appears magnetic remote sensing is used a lot :

Define 50m X 50m areas of interest for Magnetometer survey to look for buried, burned features [...] Because of the high firing temperatures required for pottery production, buried kiln sites should be expressed as very large magnetic anomalies in the high iron content soils present in the area.

I'm basing my answer on the definition in Petit Robert of "casson" as "débris de verre destiné à être refondu..." and on the following website: http://www.perillos.com/glassoven2.html. Might also be able to say pit oven for melting glass.
