French term

arbitrages budgétaires

French to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
Describing a public-sector building project that was cancelled "pour des raisons d'arbitrages budgétaires".
My understanding is that the government or the ministries involved were unable to agree who would foot the bill, but how to say that in a similarly roundabout way? I don't think "arbitration" fits here.
Many thanks!

df49f (X) Jun 13, 2006:
@ Philippe: my above comment (as well as my series of disagrees) made AFTER the question was graded -> no influencing anyone
PFB (X) Jun 13, 2006:
PFB (X) Jun 13, 2006:
@df49f: 3.6 No attempt may be made to influence others' decisions. Encouraging an asker to choose one's own suggested translation, or peers to agree with one's own answers and/or disagree with answers provided by others, is prohibited.
Sandra Petch (asker) Jun 13, 2006:
Merci df49f pour votre zèle.
df49f (X) Jun 13, 2006:

for (some*) budgetary reasons

* - optional.
Here the budget serves as the arbiter or the basis on which decisions will be made concerning implementing or not of the project. The offices/functionaries concerned do not think their budgets can accommodate the project, therefore, pure and simple, budgetary reasons.
Peer comment(s):

disagree df49f (X) : ce n'est pas le sens du français - arbitrage dans ce sens signifie "choix, décisions entre plusieurs options" - tradeoffs offered by CMJ is the correct meaning

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I hesitated between this answer and "disagreement". With no wider context I prefer to play it safe, and "budgetary reasons" is what it all comes down to. Thank you Emekadavid and everyone else."

budgetary trade-offs

arbitrages can often be translated this way - it boils down to wheeling and dealing....

disagree nnaemeka Odimegwu : based on the asker's comment, "unable to agree" i don't think there was a trade-off here

budget conflicts

not terribly creative but why not? is also vague in terms of where the conflict was coming from...

Peer comment(s):

budgetary disagreement/disagreement over the budget

Same meaning, just another way of putting it.

merci!!
agree Joy Gehner : I like this best. Disagreement is not as scary a word in English as it would be to French ears ;-)

thanks Joy
disagree nnaemeka Odimegwu : go back to the main text and read it as "for reasons of budgetray disagreement". didn't sound right to me. i wanted to post that answer at first sight

"due to disagreement over the budget" sounds better than "for reasons of"; thanks for the comment

based on the asker's comments (they were unable to agree), I think this is an option. Choice/decision is less specific, which in the end is what the asker indeed chose; thanks for the commet
