French term

appareils de lecture de modules de mémoire

French to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks décodeur de télévision
Hi there,

""Dans la présente description, il sera fait référence essentiellement à des appareils électroniques de type décodeurs de télévision numérique, mais d'autres appareils électroniques sont concernés par l'objet de l'invention, tels que ordinateurs, des appareils de lecture de modules de mémoire de type disque dur...'

My translation:

In the present description, reference will substantially be made to electronic apparatuses of digital television decoder type, however, other electronic apparatuses are concerned by the object of the invention, such as computers, des appareils de lecture de modules de mémoire of hard drive type…

I will not venture a translation
Your help is highly appreciated :)
Thank you

Discussion

philgoddard May 12, 2011:
And at the risk of being pedantic, apparatus doesn't need a plural as it's both singular and plural already! By the way, is "appareils DE lecture DE modules DE mémoire DE type disque dur" OK in French?
meirs May 12, 2011:
apparata is AFAIK the plural of apparatus
Louisa Tchaicha (asker) May 12, 2011:
@philgoddard thanks for pointing that out
philgoddard May 12, 2011:
Strictly speaking, there should be a semicolon or period, not a comma, after "decoder type". A period would be better, as otherwise the sentence is very long.

(external) hard disk drives

this sounds almost like they are talking about removable hard disk stations, but bearing in mind this is patentese, I think "hard disk drives" describes what is meant in a concise way.

hard-disk based memory/playback devices

I think they may mean something like this. If "lecture" refers specifically to reading TV/media recordings, then "playback" is probably the closest term in English.

BUT: It sounds like this part of the text has been written/edited by a patent lawyer who doesn't know what they're actually talking about in terms of the technology, so it might be best to try and check with the client what they actually mean. What they have written is quite confusing, because to an IT specialist, a "module de mémoire" and a "disque dur" are simply different things (do a Google image search for "module de mémoire").
