French term

Voyage au coeur des mots

French to English Marketing Gaming/Video-games/E-sports
This is the name of a new board game based largely on guessing the origin of words, e.g. jeep, etc.
I thought of "Journey to the heart of words" or "Journey to the core of words" but they don't sound very snappy.
Would anyone out there have a better suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

Discussion

philgoddard Jan 4, 2010:
In that case, good luck to your friend! I really think it should be something short and snappy. I can't imagine myself saying; "Does anyone feel like a quick game of Journey to the Center of the Word?"
Esther Lavedrine (asker) Jan 4, 2010:
To philgoddard: To tell you the truth, I'm actually doing it free of charge for a friend who's trying to create something new.
philgoddard Jan 4, 2010:
I hope you're charging lots of money for this exercise in brand-name consultancy! And I hope you'll share it with us! :)
Travelin Ann Jan 4, 2010:
I've been trying to think of something that plays on "core" (instead of coeur)
Richardson Lisa Jan 4, 2010:
Travelin Ann we both hit the button at the same time - anyway back to the drawing board!
Richardson Lisa Jan 4, 2010:
googled it couldn't resist a google, and yes it already is a word board game
http://www.goliathgames.us/Wordquest_p_26.html
Travelin Ann Jan 4, 2010:
Just did a quick google on "wordquest" and it exists as a downloadable game, as well as a board game: http://www.goliathgames.us/Wordquest_p_26.html
Richardson Lisa Jan 4, 2010:
Bourth Sorry Bourth didn't read to the end of your post - I, like Lorna really like WordQuest, but it sounds too familiar to not exist already
Richardson Lisa Jan 4, 2010:
other idea
I don't know if I'm allowed to post another idea, but I was thinking if you need something more short and snappy that keeps the idea of voyage/quest, then what about 'WordQuest'. Of course you'd have to check if it exists already, which I haven't done. I'm sure itmust exist, but worth a try. Good luck
Bourth (X) Jan 4, 2010:
French version? In the French game, they have to spell "word" in English? If so, good reason for keeping "word" in the name.
Esther Lavedrine (asker) Jan 4, 2010:
How to play the game: Players throw dice, advance from square to square and answer questions about words or expressions. If they have the right answer, they win a token. The aim of the game is to collect all four tokens that spell WORD.
Esther Lavedrine (asker) Jan 4, 2010:
More info: As I said to Bourth, I did suggest "Etymox" to the author (something that could be adapted to all languages) but he preferred keeping the idea of a journey or quest.
The target audience is 10 years old or more.

The Etymology Game

Context? Is the "voyage" aspect important, as an intrinsic part of the game? Do you travel up snakes and down ladders in the process?

From your description, coeur is singularly inappropriate; is there some real reason for using this word?

If there are going to be international versions, I can see their names being of the literal "Journey to the Heart of Words" type.
Note from asker:
Yes, it's a sort of journey or quest if you like. I did suggest "Etymox" to the author (something that could be adapted to all languages) but he preferred keeping the idea of a journey.
Peer comment(s):

agree Lorna Coing : I like 'Word Quest'; sounds much snappier than any of the suggestions which use the word 'journey', and yet still transmits the sense.

agree Marta Scott : I like "Word Quest" and also "Roots: the Etymology Game"

agree B D Finch : I also like "Word Quest". "Hom(er)ing" could be related to Simpson.// Doh!

I submitted a number of the suggestions made here to my friend and together we decided on "Odyssey of Words". You've all been a great help and if this game exists one day, it'll be thanks to your help!"

neutral philgoddard : I'm not sure about this. The book and the film are called "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Also, most successful game titles are one to three words - this is a bit of a mouthful. I think you need to get away from what the French says.

Yet another suggestion ...
Peer comment(s):

disagree Chris Hall : Does this really sound as if it is going to be marketed to young children though? The target age is 10+ so it will be mostly marketed at those aged 10-20.

What's in a word?

Hello,

First of all, why do you have to tanslate "voyage" literally here? I don't like that in English hre. And second, board games for young kids don't always have simple names.

I hope this helps.
