AllegroTrans Dec 20, 2010:
And if there is no "official" English name for it ....you just have to invent a comprehensible translation, this is not rocket science
R.C. (X) Dec 20, 2010:
yes, for example in a French Governmental guidance site

Several possible translations. Everything depends on...your client !

Everything depends for whom you translate this text :

1°) if the final client is British, the translation of "Ministère de l'Intérieur, de l'Outre-Mer et des Collectivités territoriales" is merely "Home Office", for Home Office is competent, not only in national security matters, but also in Overseas relevant topics and in Local authorities questions. See http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/counter-terrorism/review-of-pre...

2°) If the final client is not British, but neither Canadian nor American, better translate by "Ministry of the Interior, Overseas and Local Authorities". "Home Office" is a very specifically British name.

3°) In North-America, replace Ministry by Department. So, it will be called "Department of Interior, Overseas and Local Authorities".

I am have been working as an agent of "Ministère de l'Intérieur, de l'Outre-Mer et des Collectivités territoriales" for 29 years. So I already got interested in your question, and I try to bring you a satisfying answer !
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : Agree with the "several possibilities" but NOT about "converting" this to Home Office or any other non-French entity; the term should be translated syntactically into good English; the asker is surely capable of this without KudoZ help
