French to English Other Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Found in the "Instructions for use" manual of a 'suremballeuse'

Discussion

philgoddard Aug 10, 2015:
Of course, you don't really need to find a translation for "crispation", since you could just say "fully activated" (position maximale). In practice, that could mean "fully pushed in".
philgoddard Aug 10, 2015:
Yes Maybe "retracted". Does that make any sense if you look at the diagram, Lovenah?
kashew Aug 10, 2015:
Crispation: The technical translation I know is "contraction", and there are others: http://www.notrefamille.com/dictionnaire/definition/crispati...

cramping or contorting

It is a kind of tensing, restraining.

panic function

The web reference (on the first page of results on Googling "bouton" "crispation") shows the same type of three-position pushbutton, with "fonction crispation". Changing language to EN (at the top of the web page) gives "panic function", and to DE gives "Panikfunktion". As the company is German, it's reasonable to assume that at least the German is correct.
This mechanism is presumably based on the assumption that in the event of a problem the operator is more likely to contract muscles and press harder, rather than relaxing and releasing the button.
