French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
The text concerns packaging of pharamaceutical products.

compréhension

*Feuille d’aluminium

I would appreciate help with the whole sentence. Thanks.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Drmanu49

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

MatthewLaSon Feb 14, 2011:
"Compréhension" is quite a vague term, and has many meanings. So, maybe the English translation should be just as vague; besides, the context will let you know what that more "specific" meaning is (probably "readability").

jeantrans (X) (asker) Feb 14, 2011:
The pharamaceutical product is tablets. So it seems to me like they're describing a blister, or something similar. The "feuille d'aluminimum" is just a sheet of aluminum foil, I believe.

Here’s the context before and after:

Before:

- Couleur: l’examen visuel par comparaison avec la référence PANTONE® doit
être conforme.

After:

Identification de l’aluminium: réalisée par réaction chimique.
L’identification est positive s’il réapparaît un précipité blanc gélatineux.
jeantrans (X) (asker) Feb 14, 2011:
Matthew, your construction makes sense -- that is how I was interpreting the sentence also. Although, like you, I was still having trouble understanding it!
MatthewLaSon Feb 14, 2011:
I have a hunch it should read (if not just for clarity's sake while translating LOL):

Emplacement et compréhension: l’examen visuel par superposition doit être conforme avec le bon à tirer original.

The original French sentence may be perfectly correct, imho.

What that means, I do not know as of yet...lol

philgoddard Feb 14, 2011:
Please give us some context What is the pharmaceutical product? What is the feuille d'aluminium? What comes before and after this? Could it mean "comprehensibility"?
Lionel_M (X) Feb 13, 2011:
Possible, mais ici nous traduisons, et nous ne nous substituons pas aux erreurs de texte....par fantaisie
Jean-Claude Gouin Feb 13, 2011:
PAS UNE TRADUCTION Je crois que le demandeur demande une explication et non une traduction ...
Lionel_M (X) Feb 13, 2011:
This is not French, so trying to translate it is ridiculous.
Please ask client what it means ? UNDERSTANDING ?

Thanks for the "print approval" bit. I couldn't think of it last night.

understandibility (and placement) of label printed on pharmaceutical package

Hello,

Just a guess...

During visual inspection, the second pharmaceutical label (put on the package) is "superimposed" over the original one ("ready to print" label), once it's confirmed that they match.

I hope this helps.

"Understandibility" may work here because "compréhension" is quite a vague term. Perhaps in English we shouldn't be as specific as "readability", etc.

neutral Bashiqa : I don't think there is a second label Matthew. It's the 'bon à tirer' that is superimposed to check that all is correct.

Thank you, Bashiqa! Have a nice day.
neutral SJLD : on the right track - readability, legibility, clarity maybe - "understandability" is important in marketing - one of the criteria for quality labelling - but I don't think it applies here / OMG Lionel agrees with me - and yet I can't understand French...

Thank you, SJLD! "Understandability" is a bit vague, but I something like "readability" in mind. Have a nice day.
agree Lionel_M (X) : readibility yes

Merci Lionel! Le bon mot était au bout de ma langue! Il fallait des autres pour le faire sortir (MDR). Bonne Journée.
