French term

directeur animateur

French to English Art/Literary Other
of a theatre

Discussion

RHELLER Feb 25, 2005:
animateur is surely the one who is in front of the crowd - this is not a "behind-the-scenes" job.
RHELLER Feb 25, 2005:
I agree that the English is lacking for this term. Vaughn is correct in detailing the responsibilities - if Scotty knows what exactly this person will be doing; it could also be an emcee
David Vaughn Feb 25, 2005:
Perhaps googling the theater could give a better idea. I see several very different possibilities: MC/host, theatre programmer, teacher/group leader for cultural activities. Another clue is if it is a private or public theatre.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 25, 2005:
very vague in the text, tho a small establishment I believe i know what an animateur is, together with animer, English never seems to quite sum it up, I wondered if it was a standard title like Director of Programming, but that's more for music festivals and tv shows, I think Rita's suggestion is probably the best option
David Vaughn Feb 25, 2005:
Is this the only job title you have for this theater? Is it a small theatre? Animature is a catch-all term in French, but usually implies working directly with groups of people. Is there mention of the theatre having extra-theatrical programs or activitie

thanks SK :-)
agree Charlie Bavington : assuming that the guy gets up before curtain-up and blathers on about the coming performance, then yes, why not?

director/MC

animateur here sounds more like a 'master of ceremonies'. Could be wrong though. Good luck!

programme (program) director

Theatres sometimes have separate positions for those in charge of the actual programming vs those responsible for overall (financial, etc) direction. I see these called 'programme director" or "artistic director".

coordinator

A client I've just started working for likes me to use 'coordinator' for 'animateur' - I offer it as an alternative and nothing more - at least it too is fairly vague :-)
