French term

la mort exposée à la mort dérobée

French to English Other Religion Exhibition on penitent brotherhoods
Hello,
This comes from a text on an upcoming exhibition on the penitent brotherhoods of Corsica. The following comes from a section on their behaviour towards the dying and their belief in a "good death".

Le bien mourir ou de « la mort exposée à la mort dérobée »
Les confréries eurent pour mission, au cours des siècles, d’aider l’agonisant à bien mourir en l’invitant à « faire son testament pour mettre en ordre ses affaires, à s’en remettre à Dieu et à la cour céleste pour le salut de son âme ».
Not sure how to word the title...dérobé = cheated here perhaps?
thanks,
Anne

Discussion

Melissa McMahon Jun 15, 2010:
Any chance this is a Corsican/Latin saying? Since it's between quotation marks... the meaning is a puzzle here: the practices of the monks suggest "la mort exposée" - all is open and held up to account - whereas death is generally hidden, "dérobée"... could the meaning here be holding the "exposed" death up to the "hidden" one (or vice versa?)?

Death exposed and death concealed

I'm not entirely sure exactly what sort of register you're aiming at here, though it looks like it might be a high one. Either way, I think something along the lines of "death exposed and death concealed" might work.

'Dérobé' means concealed, furtive, secret, hidden, etc. and 'exposé' means, well, exposed!

You could also have something like the below:
Death: open and closed
Death on display and death disguised
Death laid bare and death buried

Lots of 'poetic' choices!

Or "death divulged and death disguised", perhaps.
