Actions fédérales de féminisation

French to English Social Sciences Sports / Fitness / Recreation Women's role in football
Hi there,

I am translating a document on 'feminisation' initiatives in French football.

Could anyone explain the following sentence:

Actions fédérales de féminisation mises en place par la FFF (fédération football francaise...)

Thanks a lot

Alexander

National FFF-sponsored initiatives designed to get more women involved in football

I think this is what it refers to, rather then the development of the women's game in general. From what I can see the idea is to get more women involved in coaching, running clubs and administration. I just can't think of anything snappier right now.

agree Philippa Smith : Exactly. And what a great initiative - I was recently at a match against a team managed by France's only woman trainer. :-)

thanks Philippa. Agreed!
disagree Francois Boye : This translation does not capture the concept of "volontarisme" See my comments below

Affirmative Action Decisions made by the French Soccer Federation to promote Women soccer

Affirmative Action is a US concept; I think they say Positive Action in the UK.
"feminization" means promotion of women in French
"Federales" is an adjective referring to the soccer French Federation

Sorry, soccer is a US concept! So you can write football instead of soccer
Note from asker:
Very helpful, thank you. And yes, the target language is UK English so soccer won't do!

neutral James Calder : People like you are one of the reasons why I don't comment on Kudoz very often, Francois. I make a suggestion in good faith, as did Sheri, and along you come, trashing what we have to say. Did you notice that you don't even meet the criteria? Thought not.

Sorry if you are shocked! I am just saying that feminisation and volontarisme have a stronger meaning than your translation. Anyway, the Asker will decide

disagree Francois Boye : If this is not affirmative action, what is? Feminisation really means terminating the identification of football with men. How can you do that without reallocating resources? Did you notice the adjective "volontariste"? Do you think it is a neutral word?
