French term

activité animée

French to English Other Tourism & Travel General language question
Les activités proposées dans ce guide utilisent les symboles suivants :
activité encadrée
(guidée, commentée ou animée)

activité libre

I have translated this as follows:

The activities offered in this guidebook use the following symbols:

organized activities {symbol}
(guided, commentated or ??...................);

independent activities {symbol}

but am not sure how to deal with 'animée' in this context. Any suggestions - what exactly is an 'activité animée'.... I thought it was simply what we would call an 'organized activity' in English. Or are we dealing with French overstatement here?

Discussion

French2English (asker) Feb 25, 2007:
rousselures, ... yes, I know exactly what you mean, and I quite agree. It is one of my 'betes noires' aussi. You are quite right.... you just have to paraphrase it or choose the translation that most fits the particular context, as I did in the this particular case. It turned out that 'organized activity' was the closest to what they meant - although it really could have been translated, in similar or other contexts, as pratically any of the other terms so helpfully suggested below by our good colleagues. Thanks for your input!
Raymonde Gagnier Feb 22, 2007:
I have struggled with that word ( and with animation and animateur) for years, there is no equivalent English expression, you always have to choose something that "almost" means the same thing without being satisfied... I really hope someone comes up with something that can be useful...:-)

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Well, in the end, this term turned out to the closest to what was actually meant in my particular context, although it could have been any other of the excellent suggestions made by everyone who answered - and I thank you all very much. Cheers!"

interactive

Perhaps? Maybe where they get you to do things as well as having a commentary or being guided round....

"guided" activity

I m not sure "guided" is the right word here, but what "animée" means if that someone is there to act as a facilitator/organiser (l'animateur/animatrice). Hope this explanation helps

demonstration

I would say that "guidée" refers to a guided tour, "commentée" to a tour with a pre-recorded commentary and "animée" to a demonstration, whether interactive or not.
