French term

engagement de moyens

French to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Hello this is a description of the types of contracts available for rail simulators, the entire sentence is:

"la maintenance curative, avec possibilité d’engagements de moyens (délais de réaction ou d’intervention) ou d’engagements de résultats (délais de remise en service). Les contrats les plus exigeants prévoient une remise en service en 24 heures."

obligations of means

Hello,

Is this what you mean?

"In traditional civil law, it is often stated that certain obligations are "obligations of result" while others are "obligations of means." A transport contract might be an obligation of result, since the carrier is paid a set sum for conveying a person or an object to a certain place by a certain time and the party engaging the services of the carrier really doesn't care how it's done. Non-arrival of the package or person would be considered a contract breach and, to be exculpated, the carrier would presumably have to demonstrate an act of God. Other contracts, notably professional services contracts, impose on the professional an "obligation of means." For example, a surgeon does not guarantee a surgery's result but merely undertakes to use appropriate means to achieve the desired end. Failure of the surgery is not by itself a breach of contract."

resource-based commitment

On the basis that my glossary for a major French energy client gives "contrat de moyens" as a resource-based contract and "contrat de résultats" as a performance-based contract, this might fit the bill. Presumably the response time is regarded as a resource, whereas resumption of operation is to do with performance.

I was tempted to just put contract, I must admit, although it does use contrat in the next sentence.
Note from asker:
Thanks Claire I like your suggestion, wouldn't it be resource-based "agreement" rather than "commitment"?
