: (I'm referring to the exchanges between Asker and Margarida): Although the ST refers to an underground railway network, the question text refers to tradck laid 'ON' the ground, not 'IN' the ground.

The terme "au sol" is indeed ambiguous in French, because there is always some sort of ground under the track, that my be underground as discussion did demonstrate, however I find it clear that compared with "en viaduc" and "en tunnel" it does mean surface level
