French term

échassier à ailes noires

French to English Science Zoology Ornithology
This is from a tourist brochure about the wildlife in the range of volcanoes beyond the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania.

This name seems a rather odd combination. "A ailes noires" suggests that the authors mean a particular species, but échassiers are wading birds in general. "Black-winged wading bird" or "black-winged wader" is not a species as far as I know. The nearest I can find is the black-winged stilt or the black-winged pratincole. But if those are what they mean, I can't understand why they didn't use their specific names: respectively, Echasse blanche and Glaréole à ailes noires.

Here's the context:
"Le cratère d’Empakaai – 300 mètres de profondeur, six kilomètres de largeur – est occupé sur près de la moitié de sa surface par un très profond lac de soude. Des oiseaux d’eau tels les échassiers à ailes noires, les sarcelles du Cap ou encore les flamants habitent ses berges."

that is probably canadian french. The french is echasse blanche. the english being black-winged stilt the word for word translation is échassier à ailes noires, typical of what the Canadians do...
The first thing that came to my mind for un échassier à ailes noires was.... a marabou stork !

I also found... ...that the Maori name is taparunga, which comes out as 2 birds, one of them the black-billed gull (which also has a small amount of black on its wing-tips); however, I would hardly have described a 'gull' as any kind of échassier!

black-winged stilt

http://www.oiseaux.net/oiseaux/echasse.blanche.html is endemic in Tanzania. I would vote for that one.
