This is from an environmental text about the Emscher river. Could anyone explain the difference between "Böschung" and "Deich" and/or suggest the best way to distinguish between the two in English. Any dictionary definitions I have found overlap with one another.

A Böschung can also be the slope of a railway or a road embankment, or indeed of a dyke, so a dyke (note the spelling for UK use) can have a Böschung on both sides.
Some time ago I saw a very interesting TV programme on the Emscher; it's a river which flows, then gets pumped up a few metres and flows a little further, the gets piped, and so on and so on.
