I am translating a car registration, and this 大 appears inside the VIN # of a car that was purchased in Japan. Would the 大 just be "Dai"?
Thanks.

If your requested term is actually "sha dai ban go" i'd say "chassis number". "Sha dai" is "chassis" and, as i'm sure you know, "bango" is "number". Some kind of identification number for or on the actual body of the car. HTH.

: 車台番号=chassis number (the identification mark of the actual car, registered or not, found under the bonnet usually). c.f. e.g.: http://www.occidental.co.jp/images/power_of_attorney.pdf

What is a "number plate"? I don't know this word. Besides, "Sha dai" IS a "chassis" (as any Japanese dictionary will tell you) and there is nothing in the original term that can be translated as "plate". Welcome to ProZ.
