the effect of CHG on activated sludge
Literally the term could be rendered into "how CHG has an effect on ...," or I should say the answer posted by paul_b san is good. However, "the effect" seems to be herein sufficient. I'd like to make it shorter and use "the effect."
I also suggest you to refer to the website of 国立情報科学研究所(Nii) which you may be familiar with, where you can find a description as follows which should be hopefully helpful:
"The effect of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHG) on the treatment efficiency of activated sludge process has been studied experimentally. ....."

It may be considered that this is implying that the way it affects things is not unambiguous.
Not too happy with that, but if I consider any longer somebody else will post an answer ;-)

: Nothing is wrong with this one per se. It all depends on how the entire setence flows--like "not one unique way CHG affects ..."
