Japanese term

キャネス

Japanese to English Other Other
This comes in a questionnaire. The respondants were given a word and asked to give any images or expressions they associated with it.

Other answers have included "can", "crab", "camp site", "Cannes" and "toilet paper", so I really don't have anything much to go on here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kathy I love the image! Believe me, after reading some (most?) of the reponses to this questionnaire, I felt like taking to the Guinness myself...
mstkwasa Jun 1, 2005:
... Though, on reflection, you might be right. It could be a howler.
mstkwasa Jun 1, 2005:
Cannes - Jk - as in the film festival town in southern France? Surely not!
Non-ProZ.com Jun 1, 2005:
Cannes? Could this be Cannes? It is not the way I have seen Cannes written in kana before, but it seems to be a possibility.

やっぱり Cannes?

There do seem to be some Internet references that erroneously give キャネス as the katakana for "Cannes", but may be written by non-native Japanese speakers, which may explain it (?)

2000年ロサンゼルスフィルム・クリティクス・アソシエイション・アワードとニューヨーク・フィルム・クリティクス・サークル・アワードの最優秀外国語映画賞、 *キャネス・フィルム・フェスティバル* の最優秀監督賞を受賞した作品とあって、これは当然だろう。

Don't suppose it was originally a typo for 「ギネス」?
Drinking Guinness at a campsite while eating crab??
OK, the questionnaire answers given are way too abstract for that...
Peer comment(s):

agree Mikito Oki : Sorry, but the scene of people gathering & sucking crablegs at a campsite was too funny! I give her a credit for that ;-)

Cheers, Mikito-san ;-)
agree mstkwasa : 'Twould be the one of the worst and embarrassing ローマ字読み howler I've encountered.

Maybe we should collate them and write a book? Thanks, mstkwasa-san :-)
neutral Minoru Kuwahara : really difficult for me to grasp the interrelation between those words the asker is picking up. i can't believe some people might read Cannes キャネス as it's commnly known as カンヌ from Cannes Film Festival (Festival de Cannes), but who knows? -

I agree with you, although some (mostly ignorant?) NES's mistakenly pronounce Cannes as "Cans" instead of "Khan", and I believe the citation I gave was not written by a NJS. What about that ol' favorite スタジオ for "studio"?
Something went wrong...
4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you! I think this is probably meant to be Cannes."
