Japanese term
占有 ・ 所有
Japanese to English
Tech/Engineering
telecommunications, broadband
Hi all.
I am having to distinguish between 占有 and 所有 in the context of granting licenses in the telecommunication industry. These two words will be used separately as category labels.
占有 is in the context of granting 占有 content licenses for demo purposes etc..
所有 is in the context of granting 所有 content licenses for retail purposes etc..
I translated 占有 as "access" and 所有 as "possession" but I would very much appreciate a second (or third!) opinion.
Thanks much in advance!

占有possession, 所有ownership
「所有」を別とすれば「占有」は優越する権原と解されます。

Comment: "THanks for your help. I ended up going with my initial translation: access and possession per a conversation with the client - in this case (contect) ownership wasn't appropriate since the license does not grant the user to "own" the content on their receiver indefinitely - only temporary. I guess the context was difficult to explain on this one - sorry - but your explantion was absolutely correct. "

Exclusive Access and Ownership
I would look at 占有 as "exclusive access", because the term means to take possession, as in "exclusive possession".
And 所有 as "ownership".
And 所有 as "ownership".

: I agree with you in that 所有 is "Ownership." But, "Exclusive Access" has broader meanings to it.

Personal vs Proprietary
Without knowing the exact rights being granted by the two types of license, it is impossible to say what the appropriate translations of the terms would be.
In the absence of that information, I would guess "personal, non-transferrable" for the first term and "proprietary" for the second.
