Yet another CAT poll? Jan 21, 2009

Why so many polls about CATS? Any BAT fans out there?

I have to admit being a Trados addict since the day I discovered it. I don't know anymore how to translate something without Trados, even if the text is two pages long.

Me too! Jan 21, 2009

I always use them (Wordfast for any Word or Excel document and Trados for the rest). I am so used with it that even when I get PDF I always convert them to Word so I can work with my CAT tool (no offence to BAT users intended).
If the quality of the PDF is so bad that even an OCR doesn't work, I have even typed the whole original document!

Most of the jobs I handle are not repetitive, but even in a script there are bound to be a few terms that have to be translated consistently throughout the text; besides, I find it both convenient and reassuring to have instant access to my own accumulated wealth of terms, turns of phrase and synonyms. Not to mention the fact that if Windows decides to crash on me, I can resume my work from where I left it - beats having to sift through the Temp folder anytime!

Exactly my thoughts, if the computer suddenly crashes and you haven't saved 4 or 5 pages (or more!!) of your file, it's all there in Trados, except the last sentence you were working on!

I always use a CAT tool (mostly TRADOS, sometimes SDLX). It saves me time and physical labour. Yes, physical labour. I have some fat paper dictionaries weighing half a kg or so each, so referring to them involves considerable muscular exertion. I have now learnt to load some excellent glossaries to Multiterm, which shows up the Hindi equivalent on the screen itself when any difficult term occurs in the source.

Even in the rare case where I receive the text in fax or printed, I type it or give it for typing (if I don't have time) and work with Trados. If I receive PDF, I'll extract the text, format it and work with Trados.

Even if it's one sentence... no matter what, I'll use Trados.

Definitely! Trados is for MY convenience, not that of my customers.

Connect to large termbases provided by similar companies Jan 22, 2009

In addition to the advantages mentionned above (not losing work when my computer crashes, building up a customer translation memory) I also find it useful sometimes to connect to the termbase provided by a similar company.

I think the type of work you do must have a huge influence. I only do technical translations. I can imagine that it might be less useful for literary texts.

With regards to whether there has already been a similar pole, I'd like to add that reading ev

With regards to whether there has already been a similar pole, I'd like to add that reading everyones posts has prompted me to look into WinAlign. I have never used that part of the Trados suite before. I might find it very useful.

Trados is not the only CAT tool. I always use a CAT, but don't even have Trados

I always use a CAT tool, not that much because I don't feel safe without or because I am so used to it, but rather because all of my translations are very well suited for it, and also because that way, I can keep building my TMs and TDBs.

It depends... Feb 4, 2009

...from too many things...

For example, it's a too small piece of text. Notarial. It's for me simple to translate it without any memory. Or it is the large text with references of other my themes. Than should I open any CAT-tool and work with it.
