(The names and e-mail changed but, the phone numbers not.)

The rate of USD 0.19 per source word isn't actually unusual for some source languages (my normal non-rush target rate of USD 0.15 per English word converts to something like that or higher for German to English, for example, because English has more separate words than the German original). But the address (gmail) struck me as odd because I actually do know a company named Excel Translations. They certainly don't use a gmail address and also have never said anything about selling me software....... When companies require a particular software, how do they usually go about recruiting translators? Do they really expect the translator to buy the software first? Or is there some kind of general company user license they can bring the translator into? I remember some years ago a translator saying she received the software free from the company that wanted her to use it for their jobs (by the hour, so I'm assuming it would save them money in the long run).

I never reply to such offers. I was almost sure I would find something about them on proz. And I was right

It depends. As usual. All people are different, all companies are different. Some simply indicate that this or that software is a must and seek translators, who use it. Others provide translators with the software ther require.
But based on my personal experience, the best clients (in the long-term run in terms of rates, payments, requirements, attitude etc.) are those, who don't sell anything or don't push to buy any products They provide translators with the required software and assist in any questions arising during its use.

I just received an email from the same guy who is operating under the name PADENA TRANSLATIONS. The only clue that got me here was their phone number that I googled up. It seems to be used by quite a number of companies. This alone shows that this is nothing but fishing from some guys trying to push their software, using unscrupulous methods. The message itself is written in an unprofessional manner and besies reputable companies try to avoid using a gmail address or any other free e-mail accoun... They will ask you to buy Systran first to be able to work for them. They offer you a copy at a deeply discounted price. Once you send them money, they disappear.
They send this old scam to everyone, even to translators whose language has never been supported by Systran.

Thankfully, I grew suspicious of the fact that they were paying such a good amount of money if you were supposed to use an automatic translation software! Not to mention the fact of the gmail.com account, which I only noticed today (because I had to do bed rest yesterday)

I also received the message and was pretty intrigued at the beginning, but when they asked me to buy the software it struck me like lightning, a con situation. I left it like that and just went on with my business, as usual.
