Can I assume... Oct 24, 2008

I guess this is one poll in which no one will be asking for an "all of the above" option.

Other...??? Oct 24, 2008

Well, I knew that there are more women in the language field. If you add all totals you get 60% female v. 40% male.
What about that percentage of other/NA?
Anyone to comment on their answer, please, pretty please...

Well, Elena Oct 24, 2008

Maybe it is true but for me I know more male translators than female.

And for me gender is not an issue of translation for me the only issue that matters me is the quality of translation not the gender. So if I would have a text to be translated and the text would be to chose 1 translator from 10 where only one would be female then firstly if wouldn't like to know their gender and only the best translation I would select not based on gender but on quality

Cheers<

DTP, voice over & other services (not translators and/or interpreters).

PS: So OK, this was my poll and it was run already. I DID suggest it could be run every 10 years or so, just to keep tabs on how the population was evolving, but I think that 2 years haven't elapsed yet...

(I think it was still largely a man's world until the 60s. I'm just not sure when the change began.)

What, no Klingons? Oct 24, 2008

We'll have to run this poll again in a couple of years and see if they have found us...

According to New Scientist the boffins are working on grammar tools so that they can understand messages from outer space more easily when they do come, so it's only a matter of time

The time may come when that will be the only category.

Which option should gender re-aligned translators/interpreters select?
Just asking, doesn't apply to me

I was surprised at the result Oct 25, 2008

My main link with the proz community is through the forums, and my sense, through reading them, had been that there were more men than women in the organization.

To see if my impression was correct, but I just now took a count of the posters in the most recent thread of each forum. (Each, in case different genders posted on different topics.) Each time a person posted on that thread he/she was counted.

So, I guess I shouldn't have relied on who's posting for a true sense of the make-up of the group.

impossible Oct 25, 2008

I think that is impossible because each translator has his own creative style, when ropot translates and even if the translation is perfect the style will be the same and there would be no creative touch in it.

Very few people identifying themselves only as interpreters Oct 25, 2008

Less than 1 %! I thought there was a significant number of people out there for whom interpreting was a full time profession - what with the EU parliament, conferences and other bodies having simultaneous interpretation!

I used to do 'only' translation (of texts, that is) till last year - but a couple of interesting (and reasonably well paid) interpretation jobs have changed that! Now I look forward to interpretation jobs too, since they mean a break from sitting in front of a computer screen and 'real - life' contact with the 'outside world'! However these are few and far between. I'd like to know how it is with other colleagues - are they 'only translators' by choice - or are there simply too few opportunities for interpretation?

Regards from India on a bright Saturday afternoon,
Venkatesh
