C'è stato un tempo in cui occuparsi della cura della persona era, per l’uomo, una inutile vanità da lasciare al gentil sesso. Per sentirsi maschio, poteva giusto concedersi sapone, crema da barba e after shave (il bagnoschiuma era ancora di là da venire, altrimenti avrebbe forse fatto uno strappo alla regola del suo minimalismo cosmetico un po’ integralista). E poi la gommina: quella sì che faceva tanto virile (ma non altrettanto pulito) con il suo bell’effetto lucido e impomatato, che non scappava un capello neppure a cercarlo. Stiamo parlando di anni ben precisi, quelli che vanno dai ’40 alla fine dei ’60.
Gli anni in cui senza barbiere non si poteva stare, per intenderci. Sulle sedie di pelle magari un po’ screpolata del negozio di barbiere, si consumava l’impareggiabile rito della barba e quello più spiccio del taglio dei capelli. Anche per gli abiti, niente vezzi in quegli anni. Certo la posizione sociale faceva la differenza.
A cambiare però erano la stoffa (di miglior qualità per i ricchi, più “andante” per gli altri) e il taglio (sartoriale o dozzinale), non la ricerca di seguire questa o quella tendenza. La moda cambiava più lentamente di oggi e offriva assai poche varianti. Non che le cose siano andate sempre così. Prima, infatti, c’è stato un tempo che ha dato ai dandy l’opportunità di esprimere tutta la loro decadente estrosità in fatto di look. E prima ancora ci sono state le parrucche incipriate e i nastri di raso e le spettacolari mise a cavallo tra Seicento e Settecento. Senza parlare degli antichi romani che, se benestanti, tenevano enormemente alla propria immagine e alla cura del corpo.
Indossavano ampie tuniche di tessuto pregiato, acconciavano i capelli - prevalentemente corti - con grande attenzione, frequentavano abitualmente le terme (antenate delle nostre spa) e si profumavano con essenze provenienti dall’Oriente. I meno abbienti, invece, “si lavavano ogni giorno braccia e gambe, insudiciate con il lavoro, ma il resto del corpo lo si lavava ogni settimana o nove giorni, in corrispondenza con il giorno di mercato”, come si legge negli scritti di Seneca (primo secolo d.C).
A ben guardare, dunque, una certa predisposizione alla vanità l’uomo l’ha sempre avuta, anche se in alcuni periodi storici ha dovuto - più o meno consapevolmente - soffocarla.

Ada masanya ketika lelaki menganggap perawatan pribadi suatu kebanggaan yang tak ada gunanya, cukup dimiliki oleh kaum Hawa yang dikenal lembut dan solek. Agar dianggap macho, cukup menggunakan sabun, krim cukur serta losion aftershave. Kalau saja busa mandi kala itu sudah ada, mereka mungkin saja membuat perkecualian terhadap aturan kosmetik minimalis mereka yang cenderung fundamentalis. Lalu ada juga pomade, yang membuat Adam nampak jantan (namun sayangnya tidak begitu bersih), dengan tampilan yang mengilap dan licin sampai-sampai tak satu helai rambut pun keluar dari jalurnya. Kita sedang berbicara tepatnya tentang periode tahun 1940an hingga 1960an. Dekade di mana lelaki tak bisa hidup tanpa adanya tukang cukur, kalau bisa dibilang begitu. Di kursi dengan jok kulit, mungkin sudah sedikit terkelupas, mereka melakukan ritus pencukuran janggut dan, yang lebih umum, potong rambut. Demikian pula dengan pakaian, tidak dikenakan untuk menghias diri, walaupun tentu saja ini tergantung pada posisi sosial pria tersebut.
Yang kerap mengalami perubahan adalah bahan pakaian (kualitas terbaik untuk kaum berduit, dan yang lebih merakyat bagi orang kebanyakan) dan potongan pakaian (apakah tailor-made ataupun murahan).
