No more "Oops..." Aug 25, 2010

I almost ticked the "Oops..." option, but then I remembered that I have just changed to a Mac, including a Time Machine, which kept making automatic back ups of all of my network all the time.

I thought that was so annoying I had to download a feature from internet to calm the thing down so that it only makes one back up a day...

But now I'm safe & happy

Cloud storage Aug 25, 2010

I back up using cloud storage regularly, and use an external hard drive as an additional back up whenever I travel with my laptop.

I wrote this article about cloud storage a while ago:

Daily & Automatically Aug 25, 2010

It is done daily, because it is done automatically. By using my old pc as a server, with a network drive, a simple briefcase on that drive which is updated at shutdown so easy:)

Constantly backed up Aug 25, 2010

After trying out a few different solutions, I recently settled on Dropbox. It's a cloud storage solution that keeps everything backed up pretty well. It's not perfect but so far I've had none of the serious problems (files disappearing, reverting to old versions, etc.) I had with another application that will rename nameless. If anyone's interested in giving it a go, write to me and I'll give you a referrer link, so we both get a bit of extra storage for free! (It comes with 2GB free storage, I ... See more

I also use an external hard disk to backup every night, but I definitely feel better knowing that I can get to everything online, from any computer (eventually!).

(Automatic) daily Cloud storage Aug 25, 2010

I use a service which is set on automatic back-up every 24 hours and I was so greatful for that when the screen of my laptop split and the computor was at the computor store for fix up during 2 months. I had access to everything, my invoices and book-keeping, all current and past jobs, TM:s, so the computor problem was no big deal. I have used a similar service for 3 years and every once in a while it has been useful for one reason or the other. When I travel I can access whatever I want, whenev... See more

Translations I copy immediately into an external harddisk. Received and any other files I copy probably twice a year into the external harddisk.

I sent critical documents (translated files, TM and others) to my e-mail account. This is the simplest solution I have found so far.

daily with cloud storage and also memory stick Aug 25, 2010

I cannot believe the number of people who don't back up their files! I am using Norton Online Backup, which automatically backs up everything daily. On top of that, I often backup my current projects to a memory stick, just in case ...

Once bitten... Aug 25, 2010

I used to do backups every now and then when I thought of it - perhaps once a month. I'd had one or two hard drives fail and could recover them pretty well by slaving the drive on another PC, so I thought it didn't matter too much.

Then I had an irrecoverable hard drive failure, and lost a client who didn't believe me (!)

Now I back up at least once a day, plus weekly for ongoing larger jobs. And then a monthly backup to DVD for reference files etc. that I then remo

I'm currently backing up to USB key and would be interested to hear other people's experiences of cloud storage, particularly in terms of security.

Oh dropbox is awesome! Aug 26, 2010

Amen brother!

Other translators, you really should consider Dropbox. Cost-free to use for the first 1gig. It synchronizes across multiple machines, AND online. Cross platform, so you can use it on Windows, Macintosh, or even your favourite *nix platform.

I use it to synchronize files across several computers that I link together using synergy at home. I can simply pickup the laptop and take it out and I still have access to my files. lose, damage, and whatever else that may happen to the laptop. I still have the automatically updated files on all my other computers linked to Dropbox.

It isn't supposed to be a backup solution, but the ease of use and resulting safety net of data backup is fantastic value for money. (that is, nearly free!)

(this hearty endorsement of dropbox is non-commercial and without any financial incentive to the writer. Although it may seem like it)

I use a desktop and a laptop at the same time, so I „backup“ every time I copy my files onto the other PC (which comes sometimes a couple times a day and sometimes 3-4 times a week). Nevertheless with upgrading my desktop to Windows7 I am considering a network solution. I think an automated backup on the desktop, combined with a RAID-drive would be a good solution. I have bad experience with the external HDDs. Two of them went broken during travelling, apparently due to some magnetic influence I was not aware of. I also mistrust the Internet solutions, especially the free ones, in accordance to privacy.Collapse
