If the client is one of my regular and good clients, then I do not charge for the glossary, to the contrary, then I do.

My glossaries are messy, intuitive and not easy to read for others. I would have to spend some time cleaning it up and making it fit for human consumption. Who else to pay for that work than the customer?

It depends if my customer knows about it and has specifically requested that I compile one. If they have asked me to do it, then yes without charge, otherwise, no I wont hand it over.

I agree with Michael, although depending on the size of the project, I might factor the time it takes to build the glossary into the price.

I don't work for free, be it glossary or special formatting or whatever.
And everything has to be agreed and written in advance.
I charge per word / per hour / flat fee depending on the tasks and project. If a glossary is part of the project then it is also part of the global price.
Of course this has nothing to do with the glossaries that I have build up for my use over the years. I don't give them at all.

provided that:
glossary is requested before the translation and it refers only to that specific translation.

Glossaries are a way to make clients come back.
So why should I hand over my glossary ?
But I can imagine handing over small glossaries to favourite direct clients whom I trust, or with whom we work together to establish a glossary (in this cases it would be free)
Selling good glossaries is short therm thinking.

The way I work, I seldom have time to compile glossaries. The few that I did make never came in handy so I gave up, as I reckoned the time was better spent providing the basic services my clients demand: good, accurate translations, delivered on time, at a competitive rate.

Anything else would be "icing on the cake" for which they can whistle as far as I'm concerned.
PS I don't do "test translations" either, someone asked me for almost 500 words the other day, and I haven't even bothered to reply...

I've never had a client ask me for a glossary, but if one did, I'd probably "give" it them:
1. If they asked me for it before starting the job. (In other words, there was prior agreement.)
2. The extra work, i.e., time it would take to prepare was factored into the price of the translation.
I also agree with others that I have some glossaries that I wouldn't give away for any price.
