Per year :) Oct 27, 2010

The original poll erroneously quoted figures per month. The current poll, with 'per year' figures, is the correct one. Happy voting.

And worth every little bit of it! It makes me happy every day to know that my taxes, VATs etc are correct.

This is exactly what I was thinking... Without my accountant I'd be completely lost!

Excel and TurboTax Oct 27, 2010

30 minutes per week on the excel spread sheets to check for invoices, accounts paid, etc.
Although I will admit that it took quite some time to set up the system, and a lot of tweaking on the way.
Now, it's pretty quick and easy.
I even have invoices tailored to my major clients, so invoicing simply involves dropping in numbers.

It transfers info from the previous years, and calculates other things.
Quarterly taxes aren't that hard for me to figure out for myself and the household.

My husband is partner in an LLC, and they have an accountant. Don't know what she earns, but she is worth every penny, and makes my job with the annual taxes much, much easier. She also calculates my husband's quarterly returns.

If you keep good records throughout the year, the annual taxes simply aren't that onerous. 12-15 hours, probably less. And that includes brewing coffee...

re: above post Oct 27, 2010

I think I have been misunderstood - for those who have said they do not have an accountant I would like to know how they sort their end-of-year accounts and declarations in Italy as I spend a lot of money on someone who doesn't seem to do very much each month..... but that's another story.

Any info would be much appreciated...

... and keeping up with the changes in rules and regulations, for instance about what costs are deductible, and what percentage of those (heating, electricity, car mileage, maintenance or repairs, insurances), etc.?

But maybe the tax administration is not as complicated everywhere!

About US $ 1500/year Oct 27, 2010

The CPA takes care of the quarterly taxes and any adjustments during the year in terms of payroll and such, but is not involved in invoicing and bookkeeping.

I have a tax program Oct 27, 2010

but need a tax counselor at the end of the year at the latest, which costs me around 500 to 1000 Euros. Therefore I've been thinking about charging one to do all the work since I am really clumsy when it comes to money and taxes^^

I do my own accounting.

My "agence de gestion agréée" (registered company you enroll with, that helps with accounting but only if needed, and, most importantly, checks the yearly tax declaration)

It's edited by Trèfle rouge, and called BNC Express.

Perfectly adapted to France tax regulations, it is very easy to use once you're trained with the basics.

Its very big plus is that the 55 euros "yearly support fees" I pay include an electronic certificate-like program, that enables BNC Express to compile and print the yearly tax declaration in a format and with a registration number that allows me to send this print directly to the tax office.

I spent about 30 seconds to input each invoice/purchase in the system, but then it simplifies tax declarations, VAT declarations, amortization calculations, etc.

Well worth the money, I spend on it !!!

about €1600 / year Oct 27, 2010

and it is well invested (Germany) I can tell you!
In Germany, the accountants have to be up-to-date with all changes made to tax laws, etc. and have to attend X number of training courses per year. And seeing as I am not an accountant and invest 5 hours a month just for writting invoices, I do not really want to know how much time I would have to spend doing all of the other things an accountant does.
I get everything served on a tray, sign it, send it off to the tax office and if I

I get everything served on a tray, sign it, send it off to the tax office and if I am lucky, I do not have to make any payments to the tax office as my accountant has made a prediction together with myself as to how much I have to transfer to the tax office monthly to stay out of trouble.
If I need any financial info, I just have to call and save time on research myself.

Around £380 per year Oct 27, 2010

... so under € 500 anyway.

I'm don't have a VAT number as I earn below the UK threshold, so that saves me some money. My accountant just does my annual tax return for me. I could probably do it myself, but my time is so limited I prefer to pay somone else to do it.

When living in Italy I spent far more on accountancy!

I was in the same position as you, once. I had an accountant who was essentially doing sweet damn-all. One day my wife was going through the tax codes on my F24 forms, and she found that I was actually paying fines for mistakes that the accountant had made, but which he hadn't mentioned (thinking, correctly as it happens, that I wouldn't bother checking).

So I dumped him, and the accountant I have now is so absolutely fantastic that by fixing the previous guy's mistakes and shoddy accounting he actually paid for himself in the first year!!! He cost me about 1100 the first year and in that first year he got me 1200 euro in extra tax credits! Talk about an investment.

Even today I still receive registered letters from the tax people about irregularities from that period, usually with a fine of a few hundred euro attached, and my new accountant takes care of it.

One day I'm going to run into the previous accountant in the street, and if I do... I'm going to tickle him to death.
