Is it possible to add notes of some kind within the OmegaT editor? I'm in the middle of translating a rather long literary text, and I wanted to make use of OmegaT for productivity reasons, but I need to make a lot of notes to myself regarding passages I would like to come back to, possible alternative translations, etc. I realize this might be something outside of the normal purview of CAT tools, but does anyone have any suggestions of other software that might allow me to add not... You could enter your comments in the source document. Then, you could hide them (or not) in OmegaT, and they would appear in the target document. Didier | | | Acceptable workaround | May 5, 2011 |

Thank you for your quick response, Didier, I'll give that a shot. Though I think it might be somewhat unwieldy to flip between the source document and the OmegaT window to add comments, will it cause problems if I'm editing the OO document at the same time that I'm using OmegaT to edit it? And would you happen to know whether such functionality might be in the works for an upcoming release of OmegaT? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the TM format would allow for a third "note" column, is that right? I suppose the difficult thing would be adding the user interface for keeping track and displaying the notes?

gflan wrote: will it cause problems if I'm editing the OO document at the same time that I'm using OmegaT to edit it? It is usually not a problem. OmegaT doesn't keep the source document open once it has loaded it. From time to time, it may happen that the document is "locked". (As far as I know, that only happens under Windows.) In which case, quitting OmegaT would "release" it. And would you happen to know whether such functionality might be in the works for an upcoming release of OmegaT? Nothing is planned currently. As far as I remember, nothing has been requested at the segment level. There is a request at the project level. - Jotter, notepad per project http://sourceforge.net/support/tracker.php?aid=1766656 Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the TM format would allow for a third "note" column, is that right?
Yes, the RFE I quote above mentions that. That's not really a column, that's one or several tags inside the translation unit. I suppose the difficult thing would be adding the user interface for keeping track and displaying the notes? The largest part, yes, but not only. There's also all the associated data management, in memory, and when reading and writing. If you want to discuss this suggestion further, I recommend you to do it either in the Yahoo support group, or in the "power-users" mailing list: https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_name=omegat-development Didier | | | It will be possible in future versions | Sep 8, 2011 |

It's really an exciting function. But maybe the comments and Notes should be the same appart from the PO files ? | | | Notes and comments | Apr 17, 2015 |
kreega wrote: But maybe the comments and Notes should be the same appart from the PO files ? In OmegaT, notes and comments have a different purpose. Notes are written by the translator, as a way to comment a given segment. Comments are written by the author of the source document, to provide comments and context to the translator. Comments may appear in different formats, for instance Java localisation files, PO, XLIFF. Didier

Notes in OmegaT? | Sep 18, 2015 |
Hello, If I understand it correctly, we can now add notes to segments in OmegaT. Can I ask you where is this function? I did a quick search but could not find it. I'm using version 2.6.3. Many thanks! Rosa
Hi Didier, Many thanks for your detailed (as usual) answer and sorry that I didn't get back to you before. I honestly thought that I had already replied!
