I notice increased demand in July and August, because many translators (like myself) have children who are on school holidays. While I try to accommodate this demand where I can, it is not always practical and we all have to take time off sometime.
And this year is specially crazy!

June and July are always the two busiest months for me, ever year.
Slightly perhaps | Jul 20, 2011 |
followed (mercifully, almost) by a slightly quieter August, as Italy shuts down for the last two weeks of the month.
Every July and August | | |

definitely in June | Jul 20, 2011 |
June was quite busy and early july, but around here the last 2 weeks of july are when everyone takes off on vacation. I've been working on a large project but have had fewer offers from regular clients for about the past week. July tends to be a bit quieter around here but August is busier.

I'm always busy all year round, but June, July and August are always crazy. I just can't keep up. Happens every year. That's also the reason why I usually don't take any time off in those months.
Summer is good for freelancers | Jul 20, 2011 |
Usually I get more work coming my way in summer apparently because many of my colleagues (who are also my competitors) are taking vacation. Besides, end of June is time for businesses to prepare their half-year reporting which sometimes needs to be translated.
Holidays for some | Jul 20, 2011 |
Yes, because some translators manage to sneak off on holiday in July, so that I get their jobs as well as my own.

Is it intended as some sort of indirect zen koan?
Yes for 2 reasons | Jul 20, 2011 |
June and July? Yes, for 2 reasons: 1) A lot of translators go on holiday in July, therefore, those who stay at home have more work (an agency has explicitely asked me not to go on holiday in July because most of their free lance translators are on holiday); 2) A lot of companies and public bodies organise a final conference or a final meeting in June before summer holidays, so I work a lot as an interpreter too in this period
Usually right before everyone in continental Europe shuts down for August!
