My rates are flexible per subject, per language combination, etc., and in other cirucmstances. Of course I have target rates, usually I work for those, but on occassion I work for more and I work for less. When you accept or renegotiate or decline the offered rate, is that not also a way of setting the rate? ▲ Collapse

Translators, WAKE UP! The question should really be: Under what circumstances do you lower your rates in order to get an assignment? 1. When the job really is that much easier. It is never easy when they say it is easy, but nonetheless, I have done some large batch projects and surveys where I charged less per word and made more per hour. 2. When the change is only due to currency fluctuations, I try to hold the line for a few jobs to see where the rate is going. 3. Whimsy. When the job intrigues me enough or is for a sufficiently good cause that I do not feel inclined to push for my standard rates N.B. The compromise rates I settle on never go below my own former rates and usually match the rates I give to old clients that I have not yet pulled up to my most recent rates. | | | If the agency is well rated | Feb 14, 2012 |
If it's a 5 on the BB with many translators agreeing, I'd take the assignment if it's a lower rate, but not a ridiculous one. | | | wonita (X) China Local time: 06:06 Rates offered to me | Feb 14, 2012 |
In my observation if an outsourcer comes to me with their rates, he/she normally offers their "best rates". Otherwise the outsourcer would ask for my "all-time best rates". My usual rates are x cents more than my lowest rates (agencies call it best rates), so yes within that range.

Do you "offer" your baker "a rate" when you go buy bread? Do you quote a rate for your doctor when you need him? In my world, the provider sets rates and prices, not the client!

Giuseppina Gatta, MA (Hons) wrote: ...is the question, which contain the expression "the rate offered" and that only 9% of the answerers chose the answer "I set the rate". Translators, WAKE UP! I totally agree I would never accept a lower rate maybe a slightly lower half a cent or a discount over a large amount or a quick snatch and run job. However, we as Translators I mean over estimate jobs especially when the document are in pdfs scanned night mare , and in some cases when there are multiple files sometimes we accidentally forget to put the particular client “tm” in the analysis. Therefore, I'm flexible to discussion of rates but never with accepting jobs for lower rates. This process will simply destroy and damage the whole market and it will surely and certainly back fire on all those who are in favor of it.
