When I fancy a drink or a snack, when I feel the need to stretch my legs, when the doorbell rings, when I need a wee! Also depends on how pressing the next deadline is!

normally I get up and walk around for a couple of minutes each hour (if I remember) or, if I am really bogged down with work, I do that every 5 hours of a loooooong day

whenever I feel like it/need to unless I am really, really busy. Oh and now I read Mary's response - maybe 'other' was the wrong answer and I should have hit 'it depends'. Sorry pollster!

on How many cups of tea and coffee I've had during the morning How much fun I had the night before How much or how little sleep I got the night before How easy or irritatingly difficult the translation I'm doing is How much eye strain my computer is giving me How many times the front door bell is rung for deliveries, etc. How motivated I am to get the project done, i.e. Do I feel... Any excuse for a quick break! | Oct 16, 2012 |
and also to avoid eye strain, which is quite worrying! I have to stop myself from having an early lunch though - some mornings I'm working from 7:00 and by 10:30 I need to eat! I now have a rule - no lunch AT ALL until 12:00 Strict discipline in my house as you can see!

I'm not really all that conscious of my breaks pattern but I try not to take too many breaks, as I'm trying to get the work done and off my back. So I try to work for at least two hours uninterrupted. However my aim is to get myself into the zone so that I'm only thinking about the translation and all my physical needs seem to slide away.

After every hour | Oct 16, 2012 |
I try not to work continuously without a stretch/exercise break every hour - it doesn't always work out like that, but that is the rule. Breaks are usually 5 - 10 minutes, and exercise for me is weight lifting, so I can get a set in during a break. I try to do lower body stuff though when sitting for long periods. I think it depends on whether you find it difficult to break and regain concentration or not. If breaks will lead to further distractions, you'll soon be quite broke... I drink water because it's good for health, then I have to pee several times a day. My knees and legs thank those stretchings.
Every half-hour or every hour...depending. | Oct 16, 2012 |
I try (on advice from my physical therapist) to at least stand up, stretch or take a few steps, and sit back down every 30 minutes. However, when the deadline is pressing, I push it to every hour. I set a timer and I obey it. Most of the time. Jane
When I'm stumped | Oct 17, 2012 |
Truth be told, I'm most likely to take a break when I'm stumped and can't solve a translation problem. I noticed this pattern 30 years ago, and nothing has changed. I also break for the imperatives that Mary mentioned. However, if my work is going smoothly, I go into alpha state and nothing stops me from what I'm doing.
