How to get the terminology out of Transit packages

There has been a huge misunderstanding about the format in which terminology is stored in Transit packages. (This was probably caused by me, many years ago).

Anyway, let's try to solve this and create a workflow for translating Transit packages in CafeTran Espresso, using the terminology that the client has included in the package.

TXE = MTF =/= TBX!!! Oct 21, 2023

STAR AG decided to store the content of the TermStar dictionaries in a generic, albeit rather complex, format: MARTIF. When you export a dictionary, Transit adds the extension "MTF" to the exported file.

Inside the Transit Exchange package, however, the extension "TXE" is used (the "E" probably stands for "Exchange"). And this is where all the misunderstandings started...

CafeTran Espresso currently doesn't offer a way to get the term pairs out of a TXE file. Hopefully, Igor will decide to add this feature.

Until then, you have the following alternatives:

  • Ask your client to export the dictionary either in TBX or TMX format. These file formats can be used in CafeTran Espresso, while they don't require the creation of a dictionary export format definition by the client (which is ex... See more
CafeTran Espresso currently doesn't offer a way to get the term pairs out of a TXE file. Hopefully, Igor will decide to add this feature.

Until then, you have the following alternatives:

  • Ask your client to export the dictionary either in TBX or TMX format. These file formats can be used in CafeTran Espresso, while they don't require the creation of a dictionary export format definition by the client (which is extra work for her; more info here ).
  • Use the free version 2.9 of Xbench from Apsic: https://www.xbench.net and follow these steps to create a CafeTran Espresso glossary:

With a BBEdit TextFactory you can convert the TXE to tab-delimited:

And here is a generic approach. You'll need Keyboard Maestro for it, though you can use the included JS script also with other wrappers.
