Here is a very nice example of the above phrase:
“They pay me by the piece,” she explained. “For one company I might assemble 'widgets' and for another I might assemble 'gadgets.'” ..."
Unfortunately ... I only find ONE example of this whole phrase in Google! This is still a valid way of saying it, however; just look up the separate phrase "by the piece" ... over 360,000 google hits for this.
