English term or phrase: Enterohepatic recirculation of methotrexate has been proposed.
I don't quite understand the meaning of *has been proposed* in this context. Could you explain, please?
Renal excretion is the primary route of elimination and is dependent upon dosage and route of
administration. With IV administration, 80% to 90% of the administered dose is excreted unchanged in the
urine within 24 hours. There is limited biliary excretion amounting to 10% or less of the administered
dose. Enterohepatic recirculation of methotrexate *has been proposed.*

Selected answer:.... has been suggested by researchers
Explanation:
... as possible mechanism (which in turn explains the pharmakokinetic findings).

Usually "proposed" is used with the same meaning as suggest, claim, etc.

The sentences are included in a drug monograph - in this case methotrexate --> e.g., http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/index.cfm?objectid=E88128E3-BDB5-82...

Such monographs are a concise summary of all the scientific / pharmacological findings gained in research work (may it be internal - data on file, or external: publicly accessable journals). BUT somebody has collected these study results, in this case pharmacokinetic results.

@liz, pls. note that the question was not to translate the original text or part of the sentence, but to explain the meaning. That's what I did.

And if you think this was an error of mine, pls. explain, Liz, who might be "behind" this passive verbal construction: has been proposed? Who has proposed?

Now let's go back ... here refs. are added to the methotrexate pharmacokinetics (one section):
http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~ceBYY...

click - left margin -> Pharmakokinetics, find: enterohepatic recirculation, there the ref.: Physicians' Desk Reference, 58th ed. Montvale, NJ: Thomson PDR, 2004 (p. 806).

*IF* we were able right now to go to p. 806, we would certainly find the specific citation(s) and the authors, who "have proposed" ... :-)

it does not say who has proposed this, so leave it as such. The impersonal form is often used in medical texts.

Notes to answerer
Asker: ah, I see, thnx There's no mention of any researchers in the text, so I thought that "to propose" might probably have a meaning of which I'm not aware.
