Thanks, MMUlr, I think you have hit the nail on the head. Blood is composed of plasma and several types of blood cells. Therefore the expression cellular blood components makes sense, while plasmatic blood components doesn't - it is simply plasma.

MMUlr's entries raise an interesting point - are we translating what the author actually said, or what we think he *ought* to have said?
I think 'plasma blood components' is a more accurate literal translation, whereas 'non-cellular blood components' is maybe what he should have said. But it is often a matter of judgment as to the right balance between a literal translation, and an interpretation of what the author intended or should have said.

Ich finde "plasmatische Blutkomponenten" auch deutsch sehr komisch formuliert - es ist schlicht die Fraktion "Plasma" vs. "Blutzellen".

Possibly "blood plasma composition" - a paraphrase, but one that appears to capture the full meaning of the source text.
