Or, "began to get". Or substitute Ilan's "ailments" for infirmities.

I thought that "Infirmities began to get the upper hand" sounded a tad old-fashioned, in case that's a note you want to strike. Found quite a number of 19th century book citations, in which various infirmities were getting the upper hand over people, or over their hearts, etc.
