Right, Finnish Swedish!! Another complication is that this seems to be a Finnish Swedish word not generally used in Sweden. For example, my inhouse consultant has never heard the term even though she studied ecology here. I won't go too deeply into the difficulties of translating Finnish Swedish (pretty horrific, especially when translated from Finnish to Swedish), but will say I have enlightening conversations about language with my Finnish Swedish neighbor who grew up in Österbotten. Looking at the Finnish word (from Wikipedia) you get a variety of direct translation suggestions ranging from grove, grove forest, to broad-leaved forest, and more. Still, the basic idea is this describes a natural forest type.

meadow forest

Once I found out that the botanists prefer ”ängsskog” to the foresters’ ”lundskog,” it was a walk in the park to ”meadow forest.” See the first link for an example from a Finn.
