For the NAATI TRANSLAITON TEST, it has been converted into online as the result of latest reform. I do not agree.

The following is the reason:

For the NAATI TRANSLAITON TEST, it has been converted into online as the result of latest reform. I do not agree.

The following is the reason:

For Chinese and Japanese to be able to be input into the Computer, the system of phonetic notation meaning symbol denoting the pronunciation using English Alphabet has been invented. In Japanese, it is called as ROMANIZATION. In mainland Chinese, it is called as PINYIN. In Taiwan, it is called as something else. When you want to input Chinese or Japanese, you just type these into Computer, the software would generate a list of possible options, you just choose among them. As the result, after using the computer for a long time, people would forget about the detailed structure of some characters and would then forget how to write them.

Now, NAATI has converted the Translation Test into online form. This has effectively reduced the difficulties of Translation Tests. I think this is not right because a Translator is a professional and he should be able to know the structure of each character, instead of being reminded by the Computer. It has in fact reduced the difficulties of the language.

By the way, those phonetic notation was initially invented to help learner of the language. For example, when you are learning Japanese, should you find it very hard to memorise KANA, you could use ROMANIZATION temporarily.

Tell me your opinion of this.It is true because of the invention of computer, people have become more and more likely to forget how to writer characters. I think the move of NAATI in this case is very foolish. The employee of NAATI says it wants to test the ability of using computers. But learning how to input into the computer is much easier than memorizing the detailed structure of each character.

This is just my opinion.

This way of testing is being done in the name of making things easier. But, as you point out, valuable knowledge will probably disappear. The same loss of skills has happened in many areas. In English, students used to be taught to write in cursive. Nowadays only the "old timers" can write in that style. We have become more and more dependent on computers to do many activities. But to allow precious information to vanish from our brains can be fatal. For example, pilots who depend on computers to fly the plane can have fatal accidents if their automated systems shut down and they have forgotten how to manuever the craft on their own.

What can we do about losing these skills? We can persist in practicing them ourselves and teaching them to the younger generation. But that task will be hard because people tend to find and use the easy way. However, all is not bleak for those with disappearing skills. Just ask any farrier! They can charge a great deal because of supply and demand.
