Swedish term

Ålands Landskapsstyrelse

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Other organisation
This is a translation EN-HU, but the name of this organisation is given in brackets in Finnish and it would be a great help to know what it exactly means, because I find quite difficult to find the appropriate Hungarian translation for "Ålands Executive" - it looks like some association or confederation - could you explain me a little bit what does it represent? (It is not that I doubt the English translation's correctness, I just can't decide what the proper term would be.)

TIA,
Eva

Natalia Elo Nov 16, 2004:
No, land Islands form an autonomous province of Finland, where 99% (I think) of population speak Swedish as mother tongue. TGeografically they are actually closer to sweden than to Finland. So I still believe it is Swedish.
Non-ProZ.com Nov 16, 2004:
well, sorry for the misunderstanding initially, I've posted it in the Finnish-English language pair, but this turns out to be the other official language of the country - nevertheless, I still need an explanation of the content, thanks :)
Non-ProZ.com Nov 16, 2004:
Wow... ... and in my text it is clearly Finnish... Thanks a lot: the "" could have been suspicious :)
Natalia Elo Nov 16, 2004:
I meant I think this IS Swedish, of course:)
Natalia Elo Nov 16, 2004:
I think this Swedish

Yes, this is actually Swedish, so maybe you could try re-posting the question in Swedish>English... ? But of course the area in question belongs to Finland, not Sweden; so just to point you into (even approximately) right direction, as far as I know this is the governing body of this autonomous part of Finland, the Åland Islands!

Government of Åland

Or: the Åland Provincial Government

In my opinion the Governing body of Åland is too vague. Council doesn't convey the idea of a high level of autononomy that Åland possesses. Landskapsstyrelse is appointed by the Parliament of Åland, it's certainly more than a council.

On 1.6.2004 Landskapsstyrelse was changed to Lanskapsregering, in Finnish: maakunnan hallitus. http://www.om.fi/24048.htm
Peer comment(s):

neutral Madeleine MacRae Klintebo : Åland is a partly autonomous region, not a sovereign state. 'Government' applies, to my knowledge, only to sovereign states.
