What a slant Feb 12

Very interesting. The great of majority of translators is based in Europe, but most of the time, clients want to impose non-European prices.

The poll should stay on for 24 hours Feb 12

Or about one Earth revolution.
Otherwise, some time zones and regions could be under-represented.

Europe Feb 12

I have been living in Portugal (my home country) since September 2015, before that I lived in Belgium for 30 years. All my professional life as a translator has been based in Europe. I was based in Africa (Angola) for a few years, but by then my translator's life hadn't started yet...

Time Zones Feb 12

Surely the massive preponderance of folks based in Europe must be due to the fact that it's mid afternoon there but only 10 AM in North and South America?

Mars! Feb 12

I think I must be based on Mars today... just because of all the 503 errors, bugs, Proz subscription problems and overly sensitive people just because I spotted a terrible mistranslation in Kudoz.
Yes, definitely Mars 😂
I need to laugh, because laughter is the best medicine.

Are people in the Americas not seeing the poll? Do local servers not work? Or why there are so few participants from there?

Correct data Feb 12

The correct data is with ProZ, they know exact % from each region using the site.

We only know about those who read the forums and answer the polls.

However, Europe is indeed a region with the biggest variety of commercial/trade languages needing translation, it has a long tradition of this. Seems like it’ll be lost due to AI.

Other large languages such as Chinese, Hindi, Arabic…not sure. Sometimes demand is bigger in one direction than the other, e.g.

Other large languages such as Chinese, Hindi, Arabic…not sure. Sometimes demand is bigger in one direction than the other, e.g. a Chinese translator in the US may have more work than a Chinese translator in China (e.g. US immigration stuff, etc.).

E.g. Africa has a large variety of languages, but many of them are not commercial languages.

Hell Feb 13

In a powwow with departed linguists... They're all saying "told you AI was gonna f*ck you up one day soon". And how right they were... haven't received a job related email for more than a week now..
