Legal English

Prof. Matthew Holway (sicilyenglish.org) | http://www.sicilyenglish.org/page7....

Teaching legal English at the University, I've more or less been forced to write my own legal English lexicon for the Italian students - as the dictionaries are frequently off the mark, hard to understand, or simply too big and bulky to be of any practical use. The terminology frequently hard to grasp for foreign (non English) students are described in simple English (due to our strange/complicated legal system), are qualified with near synonyms and Latin terms. So far the emphasis is on civil law. (one of my main areas) I'm slowly adding criminal terms too! Though written with the Italian student/practitioner in mind, the document will obviously be useful for any Non mother tongue English speaker trying to understand English legal language. Kind Regards! Matthew Holway
